The Hobbit By J.R.R. Tolkien

I chose the book The Hobbit for a couple reasons. One of my main reasons for choosing this book was that I had wanted to read the Lord of the Rings books for some time now, and heard that before reading them I should read the Hobbit. I also wanted to read the book, the Hobbit, before is became a movie.

Genre of Book

The Hobbit would fall into several categories when it comes to genre. It is an action and adventure book for many reasons. One is that the whole book is about Bilbo Baggins adventures with Thorin and Company. Throughout the novel, they go though the most terrifying adventures. All of these adventures are leading up to their biggest of all, when they fight the dragon that has stolen their great treasure. It is action packed throughout the whole novel. It is hard to find a page where they are not fighting or being chased by evil trolls, dragons, or even goblins. They are always running into trouble and relying on Bilbo to get them out. This novel also falls under the fantasy genre. This is obvious from the beginning when you here about hobbits, wizards, dwarfs, and dragons. You come across all these creatures and more. You also see trolls that attack Bilbo and his friends. You see elves that are kind like you would think, and others that capture Bilbo's friends. You see all these fairytale creatures and more as the novel progresses. Those are the many categories that this great novel falls under.

Summary

The novel starts in the home of a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo was a quiet and unadventurous hobbit, as most hobbits were. This all changed the day that Gandalf, a great wizard, came and invited him on a quest with Thorin and company. Thorin and company were thirteen dwarfs who were heading to battle the great Smaug the dragon to regain their stolen treasure. Bilbo was hired as a burglar, and joined them on their long, terrifying journey. As they move towards their final destination in the mountain, they encounter almost every danger that you could imagine. They encounter things like trolls, goblins, even an ancient monster whose name is Gollum. Throughout the novel it is Bilbo the little hobbit who always seems to come to the rescue and save the dwarfs from the dangers that they face. All this is leading up to their worst adventure yet when they must fight Smaug and reclaim their treasure.

Characterization of Three of the Main Characters

The main character of the novel is Bilbo Baggins. He was a quiet little hobbit who did not believe in taking adventures. Bilbo was a kind natured hobbit as you see when he invites the first of the thirteen dwarfs to come into his home and have some tea. Bilbo does not want to go on the adventure as you can see when he says, “I am quite sure you have come to the wrong house. As soon as I saw your funny faces on the door-step, I had my doubts.” Once Bilbo does agree to join the adventure it looks as if he will never survive when he goes on about how he left his handkerchief at home. You see many times that Bilbo does not wish to be on the trip when he says to himself “I wish I was back in my hobbit hole.” He says this many times throughout the novel and is always thinking it when they are in bad situations. Bilbo, who was starting to seem useless, when they entered the forest, finally proves himself useful when he helps them all escape from the spiders. After this incident he is a new person, and is always getting his new friends out of trouble.

Another important character was Thorin. Thorin was the leader of the dwarfs and was the heir to the throne of the misty mountains. He is the one who set up this quest and leads it most of the way with the help of Gandalf and Bilbo. Thorin himself was a dwarfs and thought very highly of himself. You `` see this in the way he dresses not wearing a solid colored robe, but a robe with golden seams. You see that he thought of himself as a leader when he orders the dwarfs to get out their instruments and play for them. He is also very stubborn when it comes to money and who can know about it. You see this when he refuses to tell the elven king why he and his friends where traveling through the forest. Thorin was a great leader throughout there long journey, and he never lost sight of their goal.

Gandalf played a major role in setting up this quest. He gave Thorin a map that would give them a way into the mountain tunnels dug long ago by dwarfs. From the very beginning he is introduced as an adventurous man. We see this when the narrator says, “If you have heard half of what I have about Gandalf, you would be prepared for any sort of remarkable tale.” He was a great wizard with a lot of power. He was very helpful in getting them out of trouble when they were captured by goblins. We see some of his power there and also when he starts throwing fire balls at wild wolfs. Gandalf was well known in most parts of this world in the book. You see this often when they need to stop in a town or place, and the people are happy to help the wizard and anyone who is with him. He was a great help to the dwarfs, but sadly he eventually has to leave them to go help in other places.

Theme of the Novel

The main theme throughout the novel is all the adventures that Bilbo and the dwarfs come across as the make their way to the Misty Mountains. They come across some strange things along the way. They are captured several times. The first of many capturing was done by trolls in the forest who wanted to eat the dwarfs, but Gandalf was there to save the day. Once they were captured by goblins, where luckily Gandalf came to their rescue and got them out alive. The third capturing was spiders and not your everyday little spiders, but huge ones who spun webs big enough to hold up dwarfs. This time Gandalf was no longer there to get them out of their predicament, but luckily Bilbo was and he step up and killed many of the spiders and freed his friends. Lastly, they were captured by wood elves who thought they were enemies because the dwarfs would not say why they had entered the forest. They also see some strange things along the way such as giants hurling stones at them, and a river that if you fall in it or drink from it you cannot remember why you were in the forest in the first place. All of that only leads them to the hardest part of their journeys when they must fight with Smaug to regain the stolen treasure that was once theirs. Those are most of the amazing adventures they had while on this horrifying journey.

Conflict

The major conflict in the story is getting to the mountains and getting back the stolen treasure. This is the conflict because this is where all the interesting challenges that confront them occur. This conflict begins the second Bilbo agrees to join Thorin and company on their quest to get back the treasure. The conflict only gets tougher from there when they have to fight all the evil creatures that dwell in the forest and in the mountains. It seems as if the conflict is endless as they continue on their journey, and that it will never end for them. They persevere through all the tough times in the forest and the mountains as they encounter only to get into more troubles Smaug in the Misty Mountains for the first time in centuries. Once they get there they still have the troubles of defeating the great dragon and for them to be able to all get out alive if the must fight him. There seems like there is no way to solve the conflict, or even if there is a way to solve it there is no way they will all get out safely or alive. This goes on for almost a whole year until they even reach the mountain and from there it only gets worse, with the dragon around. That is the major conflict in this long and adventurous story.

Relation to other works

This book is closely related to the Lord of the Rings books. It is related in many ways one because this book is the prelude to the Lord of the Rings books. Another is that they both include many of the same strange creatures, such as hobbit, elves, and dwarfs. Lastly, they both have adventures that take them to strange and terrifying new places. They also include magic and wizards that hold great powers. This book to me is also in a way like the Harry Potter books for the fact that they both have magic in them, and that they both have creatures that you only see in fairytales. This also is related to many of the fairytales you hear as a kid with the adventures and strange and unknown creatures, like dwarfs and such. Also, like in the fairytales you see magic that helps the good guys proceed on to get to where they are going. In a way it is related to Greek mythology because they both have bizarre creatures going on quest for their own greed or to regain what was once theirs, but was stolen by some creature. They also tell tales of magic and how it helped them defeat their enemies. You could also compare it to some video games like World or War Craft where you go on quest that are similar to the one in the book where you look for treasures and things of that nature. You also would battle creatures like dragons, trolls, and goblins. You would also see things like dwarfs, elves, and wizards.

Five new Words from the Book

“Very soon all about the glade wolves were rolling over and over to put out the sparks on their backs, while those that were burning were running about howling and setting others alight, till their own friends chased them away and they fled off down the slopes crying and yammering for water”
Yammering means to cry out for help of some sort.
“You ought not to be rude to an eagle, when you are only the size of a hobbit, and are up in his eyrie at night.”
Eyrie means a nest of a bird.
“’Dazzlingly marvelous! Prefect! Flawless! Staggering!’ exclaimed Bilbo aloud, but what he thought inside was: ‘old fool! Why there is a large patch in the hollow of his left breast as bare as a snail.’”
Staggering means amazing, the greatest thing one has ever seen.
“the dwarves revived him, and doctored his scorches as well as they could but it was a long time before the hair on the back of his head and his heels grew properly again: it had all been singed and frizzled right down to the skin.”
Frizzled means curled like hair and such.
“Two caught their eyes particularly, because of their beautiful scabbards and jeweled hilts.”
Scabbard means the blade of a sword.

Symbol

I chose to draw a pile of gold. I choose this because it is the main reason that any of the dwarfs or Bilbo joined the quest in the first place. Also the reason they went on this quest was to take back the stolen treasure. It was why Thorin decided to gather up a group to travel to the Misty Mountains that was now terrorized by the dragon Smaug. The gold and jewels was the only reason that any on this ever happened. That is why I choose to draw the gold and jewels in the pile like it was keep for so many years.
